Key Considerations When Installing Fire-Resistant Cables?

Fire-resistant cables are designed to maintain circuit operation for a certain period under burning conditions. This means that in the event of a fire, fire-resistant cables do not burn immediately and can continue to supply power for a limited time. This characteristic makes fire-resistant cables crucial in modern urban and industrial buildings, as they ensure that power supply circuits for control, monitoring, guidance, and alarm systems remain operational during a fire.


Main Applications of Fire-Resistant Cables

Fire-resistant cables are primarily used in the following power supply circuits:

  • Emergency power supply to user firefighting equipment.

  • Fire alarm systems.

  • Ventilation and smoke exhaust equipment.

  • Guidance lighting.

  • Emergency power sockets.

  • Emergency elevators.


Key Points to Note When Installing Fire-Resistant Cables

  1. Selection of Fire-Resistant Cable Class:

    • In environments with dense cable arrangements, such as cable tunnels, cable layers, or near flammable materials like oil pipes and oil depots, Class A fire-resistant cables should be used.

    • In other scenarios with fewer cables, Class B fire-resistant cables are sufficient.

  2. Cable Sizing:

    • Fire-resistant cables are often used in emergency power supply circuits, which must remain operational during a fire. Since ambient temperatures rise sharply during a fire, the cable cross-section should be increased by at least one grade to ensure adequate current-carrying capacity and minimize voltage drop, especially for long circuits with strict voltage drop limitations.

  3. Not Suitable for High-Temperature Applications:

    • Fire-resistant cables are not designed to function as high-temperature cables. They are specifically engineered to maintain operation during fires, not to withstand continuous high temperatures.

  4. Minimizing Joints:

    • To reduce the risk of joint failure during a fire, the number of cable joints should be minimized during installation. If branching connections are necessary, fireproof treatment must be applied to the joints to ensure the circuit remains operational during a fire.

By following these guidelines, the reliability and safety of fire-resistant cable installations can be significantly enhanced, ensuring critical systems remain functional during emergencies.
